I’ve always loved the concept of horrors. Sitting watching, telling myself I won’t jump at the next jump scare, then inevitably jumping through the ceiling. The Haunting of Bly Manor does not fail to make me jump!
The highly anticipated sequel to Mike Flanagan’s remake of Shirly Jacksons classic The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor was released just in time for some parts of the UK to go into second lockdown, giving us all something to sink our teeth into. I finished the series in one weekend, and can tell you, it is full of plot twists, shocks and plenty of jump scares to keep you on your toes.
The series is a rather dramatic tale of an au pair, Dani from America who moves to Bly Manor in the UK to help look after two children, Flora and Miles. The children have recently lost both of their parents, and their uncle has moved away so they are left to be looked after by Hannah the housekeeper. There is a plot twist in episode two which explains what happened to the previous au pair.
The show lulls you into a false sense of security, and builds up to the scary parts, we see an Au Pair looking after the children. However, there is a few things that are very unusual and slightly discomforting. Such as Floras excessive use of the phrase “perfectly splendid”, which she uses to describe everything in the historic manor. It is rather strange that an 8-year-old girl would use such an advanced phrase, but also it being the only descriptive she uses. We find out the reason for this a few episodes down the line.
We also see the housekeeper, Hannah, never eat. Despite looking like a healthy woman, she doesn’t ever put a morsel of food into her mouth. I wondered through the series if maybe she had an eating disorder etc. It not until the last episode when it is confirmed that the reason she can’t eat.
Overall, The Haunting of Bly Manor is a must watch for Horror buffs. I personally loved the show, and think anyone who likes a jump scare will love this series!
