On Monday 26 April, it was announced that CORONAVIRUS CASES in SUNDERLAND have fallen to the lowest level since August 2020.

In the last seven days, 54 people tested positive for coronavirus in the City of Sunderland. This is the lowest raise in COVID-19 cases since the week beginning August 30, 2020. In the last seven days, three people have died within 28 days of a positive test result.

However, even with brilliant news, comes a reality check. Coronavirus is still circulating in our community. Now is not the time to ‘take our foot off the gas’ and ignore covid rules. We still need to follow the government guidelines, if we want the spread of the virus to continue slowing down.

Businesses that are able to reopen have been doing everything they can to keep customers safe. But as we begin to socialise once again, we give the coronavirus a chance to surge if we do not stick to guidelines.

Sunderland City Council have reminded people that if you’re offered the vaccine, to make sure book an appointment to receive the vaccine.

Sunderland Executive Director of Public Health & Integrated Commissioning, Gerry Taylor Said:

“If you have already been offered the vaccine but were initially unsure, it’s not too late to change your mind. Contact your GP and they will arrange for you to be vaccinated. And don’t forget to take up your second dose, as it will offer you greater protection than just one dose.

“Once again, thank you for all you are doing. The picture is looking bright for Sunderland and will be able to stay this way if we continue our efforts. Please stay safe.”

The council are continuing to push the ‘Hands, Face, Space’ advice, as it is still one of the most effective ways you can minimise the risk of the virus spreading. It has also been advised that people plan ahead for their trips out. If places are overcrowded consider going back another time.
